by Justine Norton-Kertson

Fans of the Dexter franchise have much to look forward to as Paramount+ with Showtime unveils the first trailer for Dexter: Original Sin, a prequel series set to explore the origins of everyone’s favorite morally complex serial killer. Slated for a December 13, 2024, premiere, this new chapter delves into Dexter Morgan’s early years in 1991 Miami, portraying his evolution from a bright student to a vengeful serial killer.

The prequel, starring Patrick Gibson as a young Dexter, promises to delve into the origins of Dexter’s infamous Code, guided by none other than his father, Harry Morgan, played by Golden Globe® winner Christian Slater. Fans will witness how Harry’s strict moral framework shapes Dexter’s dark impulses into a deadly system for eliminating those who "deserve" it—while keeping him off law enforcement’s radar. The story unfolds against the vibrant backdrop of Miami as Dexter embarks on a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department, adding a layer of tension as he straddles the line between budding professional and hidden predator.

Adding star power to the cast are Patrick Dempsey, Molly Brown, James Martinez, Christina Milian, Alex Shimizu, and Reno Wilson, with Sarah Michelle Gellar making a special guest appearance. Further grounding the series in its roots, Michael C. Hall returns to voice Dexter’s iconic inner monologue, ensuring fans will hear the familiar, chilling voice of reason inside Dexter’s mind.

The ten-episode first season is helmed by Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips, promising a return to the nuanced storytelling that made the original series a cultural phenomenon. With this talented ensemble cast and the return of key creative forces, Dexter: Original Sin looks poised to captivate both longtime fans and newcomers eager to explore the origins of Dexter’s dark duality.

The newly released trailer teases a gripping blend of psychological drama and tension-filled action, offering a glimpse into the internal and external struggles that define young Dexter’s life. With themes of morality, justice, and personal darkness at its core, Dexter: Original Sin is shaping up to be a worthy addition to the Dexter legacy.
